Saturday, October 10, 2009 - Shauna Sweeney/Raffa & Rainer/Shawn Snyder

If you heard me on Michael Stock's show in late-August, you may recall I bemoaned the lack of young people at folk events in South Florida, as opposed to the northeast (my point of refererence is the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, which I attend every July), where there are beaucoups of people in their teens and twenties. We're very excited about this concert, introducing you to local singer-songwriters Shauna Sweeney, Raffa & Rainer and Shawn Snyder - with amazing young performers such as these, right in our own backyard, the future of folk and acoustic music is guaranteed to thrive into the next generation!

All these local musicians on the stage at the Labyrinth Cafe two evenings ago. And my first time hearing of all of them.

Shauna Sweeney. A whole lotta living going on in her music. It was a night for good music all around, but great lyrics and Shauna got it going. She's got a powerful voice driving powerful songs. I wish I could remember the name of the one which she said will be the first one on her new CD. First-rate, it was. I could imagine that one playing out of car radios all winter. I guess I'll have to try to catch it's Oct. 25th release party at the Old Key Lime House, Ocean Ave, Lantana, just west of the Intracoastal - a great house over 100 years old on the water. Shauna's got a wonderful and charming presence up there on the stage.

Shawn Snyder. His songs come and take him over when he sings them, and they work their way out of him in a variety of emotions - but always passionate. I don't know; it all sort of comes out not just from his voice, but through his whole body wrapped around his guitar. He's got very clever craftsmanship in his songs. A couple times I wasn't sure the song had finished singing him yet - not until the signature twinkle from his eye that, as far as he knew, the song was done. Great fun to witness and be part of.

Raffa and Rainer. Raffa's name refers to one who brings healing in the sound of the voice and music, and thru the presence of the ones who bring that sound to us. She's got a voice that's full of innocence and vinegar. . . . I don't even know what that means; you have to hear them. These are songs that have a lovely lilt to them, but when the words soak in, you're in for a string of surprises. Very delicate, smart, witty writing mixing with some inventive guitar work by Rainer. He played a great, seasoned electric guitar that had to be twice his age. And when he plays, he just melts into the instrument and melds with the notes. There was some very tasteful slide work, some deft looping, and flat-out original musicianship. The only dilemma is deciding which one of them to watch when they're playing.

As always, Susan Moss, the league of volunteers, and the UU for hosting this - we thank you.

Saturday, September 12, 2009 - Doug Spears/Grant Peeples

Doug Spears and Grant Peeples are both Florida artists, Doug from Orlando and Grant from Tallahassee, both of whom write and sing many wonderful songs about our great state - that's about where the similarity ends. Doug's music and style tend to be sweeter and more mellow - Grant's is in-your-face edgy... and I think this concert promises to be a most special yin/yang evening!

How good to be back to the Labyrinth Cafe.

After driving through a storm that reminded me the directions for building an ark are in Genesis 6, coming to the familiar place that is the Cafe was a good way to come in from the storm.

Doug Spears and Grant Peeples.

Our host, Susan Moss, told us it would be an evening of contrasts: Doug - sweet, story-telling music; Grant - 'he has sort of an edge to him.'

Grant did have an edge to him. And he wasn't afraid to use it. Matter of fact, he sort of walked right up to it and peed over the side. This was in-your-face poetry and passion. Laugh-out-loud funny lines. Truth. A new "state 'o Florida" song that pretty well describes the state of Florida. It would keep some of the riff-raff out - 'riff-raff', of course, being all those who moved to Florida after I did. After an evening of his music, I did join the Peeple's army last night.

Doug Spears. I heard him first at the one-day Round Up festival. I'm glad I got to hear more of him. He was accompanied by a terrific musician, Ron Litschauer, who co-produced Doug's CD Break Some Stones and who, I hear, is local. He plays a sweet mandolin. "The One Not There", off that same CD, touched my spirit. These were songs about Florida that ranged from the very personal to the very historical. Not only did I learn something about Doug; I learned about this State we share. I appreciate knowing more about both.

It was a flannel-shirt music night. Doug wore his on the outside. Grant sort of wore one, but with metal studs on the inside. Doug sang about history - personal and otherwise. Grant suggested making some. There's a time and a place for both, and it was Saturday night at the Labyrinth Cafe.

Susan Moss: welcome back. We hope the community and music you foster around us now surrounds you. A long summer brought you changes. May the harmonies of life we all treasure sing their personal songs to you now.

Thanks, again, to the whole group of volunteers who made the Cafe warm and welcome. The new seating arrangement has a nice feel to it.

Another great concert season is underway.

Welcome!

The Webmaster (thanks, Bob!) at our Labyrinth Cafe site has been urging me to start some sort of blog to add a personal touch to our monthly concert series offerings - I thought it might be easier to begin it here, and link to it from there...

Even though Bob is extremely prompt with his updates, this way I can upload posts whenever I choose... and people can comment (if they so choose) - this will be a good place to share other items of musical interest as well... :-)

If you are a folk and acoustic music fan who lives in (or is visiting) the South Florida area, please check out our schedule in the right sidebar and pay us a visit - we are very proud of what we do, and take great delight in offering up songs and community!
